ISSUE 8: What about new parks?

The common practice for building new parks has been to wait until the Development Charges have been collected form the sale of the houses. In my opinion, this system is unfair to the first people in a new development, especially in the New Urbanism areas. It meant that the residents not only had to put up with mud and dust from construction and no sod, but also there were no opens spaces available.

  • Working with the developers, they are now putting in the parks concurrent with the buildings. We have also found a way to upgrade the amenities in the parks in the East End of Markham, and you will soon be seeing them as you enter the parks.
  • I initiated the practice that each time a neighbourhood park is being planned of calling a public meeting with the residents, and the new residents who have purchased the homes, but have not yet moved in. This wasn’t done in the past. We show the possible layouts of the park and let the public decide on which plans they prefer. After all, the parks are for the people.
  • I’ve been working with the various groups who control the Rouge Park to make certain that we maintain our wilderness area along the Little Rouge, while still allowing the park to be enjoyed by the residents. The Pathways and Trails Master Plan is almost finished, and when completed will link our major parks together with a system of trails, pathways and bike lanes.

Parks Planning

In order to meet the needs of all residents, parks are created according to the Parks, Recreation, Culture & Library Master Plan.  The plan is divided into three sections – Outdoor, Indoor and Library and Cultural.
