Our current Fire Safety House has reached the end of it’s normal useful life and as approved in the 2007 Capital Budget will be replaced by a new unit this May. The original Fire Safety House was designed with low ceiling heights and each time it is moved it must be done at a cost with a towing company due to the mechanical condition and size of the unit.
The house also requires constant repair due to its age and wear and tear and has been substantially renovated twice in the last 18 months as a result. There is no onboard power source so portable generators or extension cords must always be utilized.
The new proposed house has a 7 foot ceiling, is barrier free and is designed for children as well as adults. It has a built in generator and towing costs will be eliminated as the house is designed to be towed by a light duty town vehicle. It is fully heated and air conditioned to allow for both summer and winter events and is of seamless fiberglass construction that provides excellent protection against the elements.
We intend to make full use of this new teaching tool by featuring it at the following community events that will mean exposure to more than 160,000 people annually.
Events the unit will be involved in are;
New programs
There is also an opportunity to utilize this new Fire Safety House in new and different ways such as;
Typical lessons that will be taught at these events include the proper response to smoke alarms; roll out of bed, crawl below smoke, feel the door, have a second way out and a meeting place. These lessons along with kitchen fire safety (cooking burns, scalds and poisons) would be enhanced by use of the new Fire Safety House. In addition those schools involved in the Learn Not To Burn (LNTB) or Risk Watch programs will receive lessons that will be supported by the Fire Safety House including home fire inspections, escape planning, electrical, kitchen, fireplace and candle safety, calling 911, the hazards of carbon monoxide and proper use of CO detectors, plus reinforcement of the pre-school lessons mentioned above.
The annual Markham Fair is a four day event at the end of September, with an average attendance of over 85,000 people. Markham Fire & Emergency Services has a presence at the fair and the Safety House will be used there for the full four days and staffed with programs during peak times.
During annual Fire Prevention Week in October, Markham Fire and Emergency Services holds a very successful open house consistently attended by over 1,000 children and adults. The Safety House will be used at this event as well. These along with a number of other community festivals and special events throughout the year will provide an opportunity for the new Smoke House to be put to good use.
