Markham Centre - Past, Present and Future
A brand new "downtown" for all of the residents of Markham has been a long standing dream of the Town of Markham. In 1994, following a lengthy design and community consultation process, Town Council approved a plan for Markham Centre. However, until recently, little development occurred. Now, construction cranes can be seen all across Markham Centre, and more new developments are being proposed.
The original vision for Markham Centre as a vibrant, human scale, mixed-use Town Centre is just as valid today as it was back in 1994. However, the Town needs to update the plan and policies to respond to new challenges, in particular the identification of Markham Centre as an "Urban Growth Centre" in the Provincial government's growth plan for the greater Toronto area, and the identification of the Unionville GO Station as a "Mobility Hub" by Metrolinx. (Metrolinx is the provincial agency that oversees and coordinates transportation in the greater Toronto area.)
This community information session is being held by the Town to inform the community about the overall vision and plans for Markham centre, current and proposed developments, the challenges facing the future of Markham Centre, and how the Town of Markham proposes to continue to respond to these challenges to ensure that the vision of Markham Centre is delivered, while respecting the interests of the surrounding communities.
The Information Open House will be divided into three parts:
